Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center (New Philadelphia) (Venue info/directions)
330 University Dr NE, New Philadelphia

Hector OliveraThe Tuscarawas Philharmonic proudly presents this internationally-acclaimed organist whose concerts of both popular and classical music on his two touring organs invariably give rise to such accolades as “dazzling,” “stupendous,” “totally impossible to adequately describe,” “the sheer power (he) can unleash,” “absolute Olympic virtuosity” and “in a class by himself.”

Tickets: www.tuscarawasphilharmonic.org or PAC Box Office 330-308-6400

Since entering the Buenos Aires Conservatory as a child prodigy at age six, Hector Olivera has become one of the most sought-after organists in the world. Whether in a prestigious venue like Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall or Cathedral Notre Dame in Paris, in conjunction with a celebrated event like the Olympics, or in one of countless private "standing-room-only" concerts for international heads of state, Olivera’s passionate and stirring artistry brings audiences to their feet time and time again.

His technical virtuosity is absolutely astounding, but at the core of his playing lies a remarkably deep and emotional invitation for the audience to not just listen, but fully engage in a musical experience. Hector Olivera is truly "original," presenting both classical and popular works in an evening of music you will certainly never forget.

"[Olivera] literally stopped the show!" - Garrison Keeler, A Prairie Home Companion, NPR

"… an opportunity to hear and see greatness." - Composer Robert Vandall, the Tuscarawas Philharmonic

"It is totally impossible, in print, to adequately describe and do justice to the brilliance of his technique." - International Organ Festival, Manchester, England

"Olivera swept the audience with absolute Olympic virtuosity and that still doesn’t say it … Hector Olivera is in a class by himself." - The Atlantic Journal

The Choir of Men and Boys

Since Holy Week never falls within term time at the University of Cambridge, this service was conceived by the Rev. Andrew Macintosh, Dean of Chapel at St. John's College, and Dr. George Guest, college organist, as a means for the college community to share the Holy Week experience. The overwhelmingly positive response to the new liturgy immediately secured it a permanent place on the Chapel's schedule of choral worship services, second in popularity only to the Advent Carol service. Even Dean Macintosh stated, "I think it's actually more wonderful than the Advent Carol service."

Since typical parishes and cathedrals do celebrate Holy Week services, the Passion service was adapted by Dr. Dale Adelmann for their use. The service centers around three sung Passion gospels, interspersed with readings, as well as congregational hymns, and carols sung by the choir.

Many who have attended this service have made the comment, "It was the most moving service I've ever attended in my life." It is indeed a powerful preparation for Holy Week which reinforces that inextricable link between Christ's Incarnation and Passion.

Learn about the fascinating art and science of baroque pipe organs with Chemist Catherine Oertel on Monday, October 3 at 7 p.m. at the Hudson Library & Historical Society. Pipe organs of the Baroque era are the “endangered species” of the musical world and are noted for their ties to significant composers and pre-industrial technologies. Centuries-old organs stand as valuable documents not only of musical history but also of technological history. Today, the natural atmospheric corrosion of organ pipes threatens the ability of these historic pipe organs to produce sound. Oertel will discuss the historical and environmental causes of corrosion, the chemistry involved in restoration and the importance of preserving these historical instruments. Anyone interested in history, science, or music will enjoy this captivating talk.

Catherine Oertel is an associate professor of chemistry at Oberlin College. She teaches introductory and inorganic chemistry as well as an interdisciplinary course on the chemistry of materials used in artwork. Her research in synthesis and detailed structural characterization of oxide-based materials, including those that form as corrosion products on lead-rich objects, is supported by the National Science Foundation and the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation. Catherine was a postdoctoral fellow at the Cornell Center for Materials Research and the Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden.

Holy Trinity Lutheran (Akron) (Venue info/directions)

Concert audiences across the United States have been brought to their feet by a pairing of musical personalities as improbable and winning as Organized Rhythm’s combination of the pipe organ and percussion.  British organist Clive Driskill-Smith,whose solo performances in England and America earned him recognition as one of his generation’s star organists, is wry and reserved—until he lets loose an astonishing battery of effects at the keyboard. He’s complemented by the athletic movement of Joseph Gramley, a physically towering Oregon native whose own crowd-pleasing solo concerts and work with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble have made him one of the leading percussionists performing today. This powerful and harmonious duo presents what has been described as “…an exciting two-hour musical adventure, [offering] startling clear insight into what makes a live performance good, and why good live performances are important for us....passion, technical mastery, and precision. " (The Granite State News, Wolfeboro NH)

Faith Lutheran (Akron) (Venue info/directions)
2726 W Market St, Akron

On Sunday afternoon, February 20th, we will have a small recital/demonstration of the Faith Lutheran organ first, then we will have open console time. Indeed, everyone is invited to come up and play the instrument. It is a Rodgers-Schantz hybrid with over 400 additional digital voices to the original 1969 Schantz instrument. So, please bring something to play—perhaps something you wouldn’t play regularly in church—to try out some of the many colors of the instrument. It’s a big box of crayons, so to speak!
For a little inspiration, here’s a link to Bob Mollard demonstrating the instrument:
